In the midst of heightened tensions following the Sandeshkhali violence, Shahjahan Sheikh, a prominent Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, was apprehended by the West Bengal Police today. The arrest took place in the Sarberia area, with Sheikh currently under police custody in Basirhat. This move comes as a significant development amid the ongoing unrest in the region.

The arrest of Sheikh Shahjahan is seen as a crucial step by law enforcement to address the escalating turmoil in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas. Sources within the police department revealed that the arrest was carried out in compliance with directives from the Kolkata High Court, empowering authorities to take action against individuals involved in the violence. This arrest holds legal ramifications, as it aligns with the directives issued by the Kolkata High Court to maintain law and order in the Sandeshkhali region amidst the ongoing turmoil. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has welcomed the arrest of Sheikh Shahjahan, who had been evading authorities since the violence erupted. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has dismissed the arrest as a staged event, claiming that Sheikh had been under the protective custody of the West Bengal Police.

TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh applauded the timely arrest, emphasizing the party's commitment to upholding the law. On the other hand, BJP spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya alleged that Sheikh's arrest was orchestrated by the TMC and the state police. The Sandeshkhali region has been in turmoil for over a month due to protests against Sheikh and his associates, alleging sexual abuse and land encroachment. Sheikh's arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing saga of unrest in the area.
