A complaint has been filed against cricketer Virat Kohli in connection with the tragic stampede that occurred near Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, leaving 11 people dead and dozens injured. The complaint, submitted by social activist HM Venkatesh at Cubbon Park Police Station, accuses Kohli of promoting gambling through the Indian Premier League (IPL), claiming this incitement led to the crowd surge and subsequent tragedy.

According to Venkatesh, the IPL is no longer just a sport but an avenue for gambling, with Kohli being one of its most visible promoters. He argued that such endorsements encouraged mass gatherings and indirectly triggered the fatal incident. The activist urged the police to name Kohli and members of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team as accused in the case.

However, police sources confirmed that no First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Kohli at this stage. Authorities have stated that the complaint will be examined under the ongoing investigation, which already includes multiple arrests and legal actions.

So far, four individuals, including RCB official Nikhil Sosale and three event managers, have been taken into judicial custody. They were apprehended during a joint operation by Bengaluru Police and the Central Crime Branch at the city’s airport. Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court has granted interim protection to officials from the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), preventing coercive action for now.

The state government has come down strongly on the handling of the event, suspending several top police officers for negligence. The situation remains tense as the investigation continues and legal battles unfold.
