Ulta Rath Yatra tragedy: Tripura CM Manik Saha

Tripura, June 29, 2023 – In the wake of a tragic incident during the annual Rath

Yatra festival, which claimed the lives of several devotees due to electrocution, the Chief Minister of Tripura, Manik Saha, has ordered a magisterial inquiry to investigate the circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident.

The incident occurred yesterday during the Rath Yatra procession in the city of Agartala. Devotees from various parts of the state had gathered in large numbers to witness the grand procession of Lord Jagannath, accompanied by his siblings, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra.

However, the festive atmosphere turned into a scene of horror when a section of the procession route came in contact with a live electric wire, resulting in multiple electrocution deaths and injuries. Expressing deep sorrow and concern over the tragic incident, Chief Minister Manik Saha has directed the local administration to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

The magisterial inquiry has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the accident and identify any lapses or negligence that may have contributed to the electrocution deaths. “The loss of innocent lives during a religious celebration is extremely distressing.

It is our duty to ensure the safety and security of our citizens, especially during such events. The magisterial inquiry will help us understand the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident and take appropriate measures to prevent such tragedies in the future,” stated Chief Minister Manik Saha.

The magisterial inquiry will be headed by a senior government official, who will be responsible for examining the sequence of events, inspecting the site of the incident, gathering evidence, and interviewing witnesses. The inquiry will also assess the role of the concerned authorities responsible for the management and safety arrangements of the Rath Yatra procession.

Meanwhile, the state government has announced a compensation of Rs.4 lakh for the kin of the deceased, Rs.2.5 lakh for those who have sustained over 60% burn injuries, and 75,000 for those who suffered 40-60% burn injuries. The PM Relief Fund would also provide 50,000 for the injured and 2 lacks for each of the relatives of the deceased, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The tragic incident has sent shockwaves throughout the state, with people expressing their condolences to the families of the victims. There have also been demands for stringent action against those found responsible for the lapse in safety measures.

As the magisterial inquiry gets underway, the people of Tripura hope for a swift and comprehensive investigation that will shed light on the causes of the tragedy and bring justice to the victims and their families. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of prioritizing safety measures during public gatherings and religious celebrations to avoid such heartbreaking incidents in the future.
