Shubman Gill's performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 garnered attention as he secured his maiden World Cup fifty against Bangladesh at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. However, former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disappointment, stating that Gill missed a significant opportunity to shine.

Gill, opening alongside skipper Rohit Sharma, contributed 53 runs off 55 deliveries. The partnership between the two added 88 runs to India's scoreboard before Rohit Sharma departed, trying to dispatch a short delivery by Hasan Mahmud over deep square leg but failing to clear the boundary.

In a match played on a batsman-friendly pitch, Gill displayed his skills by hitting five fours and two sixes. His promising innings came to a halt with a mistimed shot during Mehidy Hasan Miraz's over. The ball found Mahmudullah at deep mid-wicket, who managed to stay inbounds, preventing Gill from adding more to his score.

Shubman Gill had a golden opportunity to convert his fifty into a century, with the stage set for him to anchor India's chase of 257 runs in Pune, where the pitch favoured the batsmen. Furthermore, Gill had a chance to break the record set by Hashim Amla for the fastest 2,000 runs in ODIs, needing just 67 runs to achieve the milestone.

However, Gill couldn't seize this chance in the World Cup match and now looks to accomplish the feat in India's game against New Zealand at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala on October 22. He is just 14 runs away from setting a new record for the fastest 2,000 runs in ODI cricket.

In the year 2023, Gill has already amassed 1,299 runs in 22 matches, making him the highest run-scorer in ODIs this year. Notably, his remarkable performances in India's Asia Cup victory and the three-match ODI series against Australia led to him being named the ICC Player of the Month last month.

Sunil Gavaskar's critique of Shubman Gill's performance highlights the missed opportunity in the World Cup, raising expectations for Gill's future innings on the international stage.
