Rishi Kapoor Prohibits Son Ranbir's Early Acting Debut Due to 'Heroine Shortage'

Rishi Kapoor

Despite collaborating with numerous leading actresses throughout his career, Rishi Kapoor openly acknowledged that he didn't quite 'match' with many of them on-screen due to his boyish appearance. Revealing this insight in his autobiography, "Khullam Khulla," he shared the specific reason behind his decision to prohibit his son, Ranbir Kapoor, from venturing into acting until he reached the age of 26.

In his candid account, Rishi Kapoor lamented the scarcity of fitting heroines and the missed opportunities it brought forth. Reflecting on his collaborations with accomplished actresses like Zeenat Aman and Moushumi Chatterjee, he highlighted how circumstances didn't align for them to be paired onscreen. Despite sharing the screen with Zeenat in "Hum Kisise Kum Naheen," they weren't cast as a romantic duo. Similarly, Moushumi was already married when they worked together in "Zehreela Insaan," preventing them from being paired.

In his autobiography, Rishi Kapoor revealed his reluctance to let Ranbir Kapoor face the challenges he encountered while searching for a 'suitable heroine' to act alongside.

Rishi Kapoor further expressed that he faced challenges in forming on-screen chemistry with the prominent leading actresses of his time. He acknowledged the age dynamics that played a role in this, citing examples such as Hema Malini, with whom he could only collaborate on a non-mainstream project like "Ek Chadar Maili Si" (1986), which revolved around the custom of a young brother-in-law marrying his older brother's widow. Additionally, he noted that actresses like Rekha, Parveen Babi, and Zeenat Aman, who were of similar age, appeared older when paired opposite his youthful appearance. Rishi highlighted that this difficulty is encountered by any actor who starts their career at a young age, and he cited Shahid Kapoor and Imran Khan as examples who faced similar challenges. This circumstance played a significant role in his decision to make Ranbir wait until he turned 26 before making his acting debut.

Ranbir Kapoor eventually marked his debut in the film industry with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Saawariya" in 2007. Although he was paired alongside fellow newcomer Sonam Kapoor in the movie, it unfortunately didn't fare well both critically and commercially. Nevertheless, Ranbir demonstrated his resilience by bouncing back with a string of remarkable successes, including notable films like "Wake Up Sid," "Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani," "Barfi," "Rockstar," and "Rajneeti." The pinnacle of his career came in 2018 with the release of "Sanju," which emerged as his biggest blockbuster.

In his most recent appearance, Ranbir captivated audiences with the romantic comedy "Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar," which surpassed the Rs 200 crore mark globally. Looking ahead, fans eagerly await his forthcoming venture, the action-packed film titled "Animal."
