In December 2023, WhatsApp, under Meta's ownership, undertook a robust measure against 69 lakh problematic accounts in India, adhering to the new IT Rules. This action was disclosed in the company's recent statement on Monday. Notably, 1,658,000 accounts faced preventive bans without user reports. Throughout the month, WhatsApp, boasting over 500 million users in India, received a staggering 16,366 complaint reports, leading to action on 13 reports. The term "Accounts Actioned" pertains to instances where remedial measures were initiated based on user reports, either involving an account ban or the restoration of a previously banned one.

WhatsApp highlighted the significance of its user safety report, offering insights into user complaints and corresponding actions. This report encompasses both user-submitted complaints and proactive measures taken by WhatsApp to combat platform misuse. The Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC), introduced by the Indian government, aims to address concerns related to social media content. Focused on content-related issues, the GAC handles appeals from users challenging decisions made by social media platforms.
