In a series of operations conducted ahead of Republic Day, two men were arrested in Tripura for possessing illegal firearms, while Assam police seized a significant cache of explosives, including 36 hand grenades and detonators.

In Tripura’s Dharmanagar subdivision, police apprehended Neeraj Kumar and Indar Mukhiya, residents of Bihar’s Samastipur district, from a local hotel. Authorities recovered a pistol with magazines from their possession. “The suspects will be charged under the Arms Act, and investigations are underway to determine the intended recipient of the weapon,” a police officer said.

Meanwhile, in Assam, police launched a search operation near Khwbra village in the Dhekiajuli area of Sonitpur district. Acting on credible intelligence, officers unearthed 36 grenades and five detonators buried in a jungle.

The explosives were retrieved following a meticulous dig, wrapped in a polythene bag, and seized in accordance with standard procedures. Barun Purkayastha, Superintendent of Police (Sonitpur), revealed that one grenade's pin was damaged and has been secured under guard. The Army’s bomb disposal squad is set to neutralise the device soon.

These operations are part of heightened security measures in Assam as the banned militant group ULFA-I has called for a boycott of Republic Day celebrations. Police continue their search efforts across sensitive areas to thwart potential threats.
