Torrential rainfall in Tamil Nadu's Western Ghats unleashed chaos at the scenic Old Courtallam Falls in Tenkasi. The relentless downpour cascaded downstream, culminating in a sudden flash flood that inundated the popular tourist spot. Officials swiftly implemented a ban on bathing near the falls for safety reasons, significantly impacting the usual weekend influx of visitors.

Despite the picturesque weather, the water levels downstream remained alarmingly high, prolonging concerns among authorities and locals. This unexpected turn disappointed numerous tourists who had flocked to the falls over the weekend, only to find their plans disrupted by the unforeseen restrictions.

This natural calamity arrives on the heels of a series of extreme weather events in Tamil Nadu. Earlier, Cyclone Michaung wreaked havoc across Chennai and neighboring districts, leaving a trail of destruction. The recent bout of heavy rainfall in the southern districts of the state further compounded the region's woes.

The repercussions of these continuous deluges have been severe, resulting in extensive damages to both public and private properties, estimated in crores. Seeking urgent assistance to alleviate the distressing aftermath, Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister, MK Stalin, has appealed for Rs 12,000 crore in central aid. Additionally, he has urged for an immediate release of Rs 7,300 crore to address the pressing needs arising from the flood-induced damages.

The situation in Tenkasi paints a grim picture of the challenges faced by the region in mitigating the effects of these natural disasters. The call for substantial financial aid underscores the urgent necessity for support and rehabilitation efforts to restore normalcy and aid recovery in the affected areas.
