China's President
Xi Jinping's unexpected absence from the annual G20 summit in New Delhi has
sparked curiosity and concern, with a U.S. official calling on China to provide
an explanation.
The absence of
the Chinese leader has prompted a call for an explanation from the United
States, with Jon Finer, the U.S. deputy national security adviser, emphasizing
that it is "incumbent upon the Chinese government to explain" the
decision. This summit had been seen as an opportunity to mend ties strained by
trade disputes and geopolitical tensions between the two global superpowers.

Finer pointed out
that it's not the role of the United States to explain the actions of the
Chinese government, but rather China's responsibility to clarify the reasons
behind President Xi's non-participation. He expressed his hope for China's
commitment to the success of the G20 summit, which has raised concerns due to
the absence of key world leaders.
China's absence
from the summit has led to speculations about its intentions. Some believe it
may signify China's shift towards prioritizing other global alliances, such as
the BRICS group, possibly indicating a move towards building an alternative
world order.

Notably,
President Vladimir Putin of Russia is also absent from the G20 summit, with
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov representing Russia instead. Despite these
notable absences, India, as the summit's chair, along with the upcoming hosts
Brazil and South Africa, as well as the United States, remain committed to the
summit's success.
President Biden,
upon hearing about President Xi's absence, expressed disappointment but also
indicated his intention to "get to see him" in the future.
