In the run-up to the Chhattisgarh Assembly Election 2023, key stakeholders, including the Election Commission, BJP, Congress, voters, and various sections of society, are preparing for a high-stakes electoral battle slated for November. The BJP has already announced candidates for 21 constituencies, primarily fielding representatives from panchayat bodies.

Notably, the saffron party has decided to embrace a collective leadership approach rather than projecting three-time Chief Minister Raman Singh as the face of their campaign. This shift marks what many political analysts view as the end of the Raman Singh era in this tribal-dominated state.

In the previous 2018 Chhattisgarh Assembly election, the BJP suffered a significant setback after a 15-year tenure in power under Raman Singh. Several factors, including strong anti-incumbency sentiments, the OBCs' shift towards Congress, corruption allegations, and internal party coordination issues, contributed to the party's electoral defeat.

Let's delve into a SWOT analysis of the BJP in Chhattisgarh to understand its current standing:

Strengths: The popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains a significant asset for the party in any election across the nation. In 2019, the BJP made a remarkable comeback by securing nine out of 11 Lok Sabha seats, largely owing to Modi's strong image.

Weaknesses: The absence of a prominent Chief Ministerial candidate is a substantial disadvantage compared to Congress, which has a well-defined leader. Additionally, the BJP faces strong competition from a well-established second-rung leadership in the state. The party's traditional political issues related to soft Hindutva, cows, and Lord Ram have also been co-opted by Congress.

Opportunities: There is palpable dissatisfaction among the public with the ruling Congress due to alleged scandals within the Chhattisgarh Public Service Commission and the liquor trade. The BJP hopes to gain support from parties like AAP and Sarva Adivasi Samaj, which might erode Congress's vote share.

Threats: The Congress currently holds a substantial lead with 68 seats, a margin of over 10% in the vote share compared to the BJP's 13 seats. The BJP faces the daunting task of bridging this gap. Congress's regionalism strategy to counter BJP's nationalism and their pro-farmer schemes further pose challenges.

Overall, as the Chhattisgarh Assembly Election 2023 approaches, the BJP must navigate these strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to formulate an effective campaign strategy and regain political ground in the state.
