Carlos Alcaraz: Youngest Wimbledon Champion, Defeats Novak Djokovic in Finals

On 16th July, 2023, Carlos Alcaraz, Spain claimed the title of youngest men's Wimbledon Champion after Boris Becker. He defeated Novak Djokovic in a thrilling final to win the men's singles final match at the Centre Court, London, UK on Sunday to clinch Wimbledon 2023 crown and his second Grand Slam title.


Alcaraz overcame Djokovic at the men's singles final match with a score of 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 at the Centre Court. The Spaniard won his second major title, having triumphed at the 2022 US Open.


In the most remarkable manner, the 20-year-old Spaniard ended Djokovic's 34-match winning streak at Wimbledon, achieving victory in a four-hour, 42-minute match.


After losing out to Alcaraz, Djokovic congratulated the World's number 1 player and praised him along with his team. He admitted that he lost to a player who was better than him, showcasing a great sportsmanship. 


Carlos Alcaraz, after claiming his maiden, thanking the supporters, tweeted "A lifelong dream! You always have to believe! I'm only 20 years old, everything is happening too fast, but I'm very proud of how we work every day".

Despite only losing two sets and reaching his first Wimbledon final, Alcaraz struggled to consistently overcome his opponent's strong resistance. His powerful groundstrokes were not enough to consistently break through his opponent's defensive play.


Summary of the match:


1st Set:

Novac took control of the match in the first set, breaking Alcaraz's serve twice and ultimately winning the set 6-1.


2nd Set:

Alcaraz made a comeback in the Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic, equalizing the score to 1-6, 7-6(6) by winning an exciting second set that lasted 85 minutes.


3rd Set:

After a strong initial performance by Djokovic, Alcaraz managed to turn the tables and take the lead against the Serbian with a score of 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1. In the third set, Alcaraz showcased his impressive range of shots, boosted by his triumph in the tie-break.

4th Set:

In the fourth set, Djokovic was determined to secure his record-breaking 24th major victory, and he elevated his performance once again in what was shaping up to be an exceptional final on Centre Court. Despite facing challenges in the previous set where he lost his serve three times, Djokovic improved his service game, allowing him to make a comeback. In the fourth set, he secured the victory with 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6.


5th Set:

Alcaraz started the final match unsteadily but quickly regained his momentum and delivered an outstanding performance. He triumphed with a 6-4  victory in the deciding set, showcasing his skill and determination.


With this win (1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6,6-4), Alcaraz joined an elite group of players, becoming only the fifth man in the Open Era to win multiple major titles before the age of 21.
