The Gujarat Titans' leadership shift to Shubman Gill, replacing Hardik Pandya, stirred opinions. AB de Villiers, while acknowledging Gill's talent, suggests Kane Williamson as a seasoned choice for captaincy. He questions the timing but wishes success for Gill's captaincy stint in the 2024 IPL.

Former Gujarat Titans (GT) skipper Hardik Pandya's transfer back to the Mumbai Indians before the IPL 2024 marks a significant pre-auction move. Pandya led GT to successful seasons but opted to return to his IPL origin. With options like Kane Williamson and Rashid Khan, GT chose Shubman Gill as captain.

Gill, a standout performer in IPL 2023 with 890 runs, now shoulders the dual responsibility of captaining alongside his batting prowess. While some laud GT's move to prepare Gill for future leadership, ex-South African star AB de Villiers opines differently.

De Villiers shared on his YouTube channel that choosing Williamson could've been wiser for Gill's learning curve. He suggested, "Give Shubman Gill time to solidify his place in Indian cricket across formats and gain more IPL experience before captaincy."

Despite expressing reservations about the timing, de Villiers wished success for Gill and GT. "They opted to thrust him into the captaincy. It might work out; I'm not saying it's a mistake," he clarified, emphasizing Gill's future potential in leadership.

In response, Gill expressed his excitement about the captaincy role, highlighting the honor it holds for any aspiring IPL player. However, the true weight of this responsibility will sink in closer to the first match, he added, eagerly anticipating the upcoming season.

The anticipation surrounding GT's bold decision to appoint Gill as captain rouses contrasting opinions, with de Villiers' suggestion to delay the leadership role for the talented youngster to gather more experience resonating in the cricketing sphere.
